The Great Dane

Thanks to possibly the best person that Denmark gave America and the movie industry, there are more smiles per minute in this story than you could ever imagine. If you have not watched any movies with the amazing Danish born Jean Hersholt, please introduce yourself to him in this wonderful tale of small town America. Actor Jean Hersholt started playing the part of Doctor Christian on the CBS radio network in 1937, sponsored by Vaseline products. By 1939 the radio program was so popular that starting in 1939 six motion pictures were produced with Doctor Christian as the main character, and this is that very first story.

River's End is a small town in the American Midwest, and Dr. Christian has passed up the opportunity to be a great and famous physician in Chicago so that he can tend to the needs of the small community. Dr. Christian pushes the town's biggest businessman to become the new mayor, hoping that he will help the town move into the future at a faster pace . . . and maybe help encourage the building of a small hospital with modern equipment for the town.

Unfortunately everyone in the town loves and respects the doctor except this man. Businessman John Hewitt, played by Paul Harvey, thinks that the doctor is old fashioned and a relic to times past and not good enough for River's End. At the town picnic where the new school and paved roads are announced, when Dr. Christian asks him about a hospital, the mayor insists that the town doesn’t need a hospital and tells Doctor Christian that he is no longer needed as the town's doctor.

The good doctor has been kicked out of the town that he has come to love more than family. . . . What will happen to Doctor Christian now? . . . Suddenly the businessman’s little girl needs an operation after a bad car accident . . . And the businessman refuses to let Doctor Christian operate, but sends instead for the best surgeon that Chicago has.

When the surgeon arrives from Chicago he tells the businessman that the operation is more complicated than he can perform . . . There is only one man in the country who has the skills to perform this operation, and he is . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
