The Singing Cowboy and the Grass Hopper
Leo ‘Syd’ Saylor was nine years old when his father George disappeared. Syd’s father George was a famous and much-in-demand building engineer, and in 1906 he went from his home in Chicago to San Francisco to consult on a large project. He checked into his San Francisco hotel on April 17, 1906, just a few hours before the devastating Great San Francisco Earthquake. His body was never found among the rubble and it is assumed that he perished.
Syd’s Uncle Ed, his mother’s brother, moved in and cared for the orphan boy and his brother. His uncle noticed the comical personality that Syd had, and suggested he visit his uncle in Los Angeles. Syd had another Uncle who was a Captain in the Los Angeles Police force. His policeman uncle had worked a bit for Mack Sennett as a Keystone Kop, and he helped Syd meet the right people and get a job as a character actor. Syd played mostly comic side-kick parts in more than 170 shorts and motion pictures.
In this cowboy adventure, he is Claude ‘Grass’ Hopper, trombone playing side kick to Tex Ritter, who is a wandering cowboy that likes to watch Professor McGill’s travelling show. In fact, Tex likes the show so much that he and Grass Hopper are following the show from town to town just to watch the show again and again. When he gets a chance to join the troupe in Tucson, Arizona, he is tickled pink.
Unfortunately, Tucson is home to outlaw rancher Harry Price and his henchmen, and Harry Price is the fastest gun in Tucson – nobody dares challenge him when he wants to bully the townsmen. Nobody in Tucson will challenge the bully rancher, but Tex has a very fast trigger finger, and he may just be the man to put the big bad bully in his place. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
