The Fisherman and His Son, . . . And the Blonde Intruder

In 1848 gold was discovered in California, and during the next decades more than a quarter of a million people rushed to every corner of California in search of riches. A fortunate few became very wealthy, and everyone else found other ways to make a living. An Italian immigrant named Achille Paladini began fishing in the San Francisco bay and sold his fish to the newcomers from around the world that settled in the San Francisco area.

Paladini was a very successful fish monger, and soon many Italian immigrants joined him, settling mostly in the North Beach area. They found and sold a type of crab that became very popular, and the Dungeness Crab is still a tasty treat for seafood lovers.

This father and son adventure was filmed before Fisherman’s Wharf became a tourist attraction. It is simply the working home of many Italian American immigrants, including Tony Roma and his father Carlo Roma. Leo Carrillo is Carlo Roma, and Canadian singing prodigy Bobby Breen is his son and best friend, Tony Roma. They are as close as any two people can be.

Papa Carlo Roma fishes with his son Tony and their best friend Beppo, played by Henry Armetta, and there is nothing in this world that can destroy the love and affection that these two men and a boy have for each other. Then, out of the blue, a lady and her son enter the picture, and young Tony’s life is turned upside down. Finally, his only option is to run away from the only home that he has ever known. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
