Waffles and Sugar

The only actor I can tell you anything about is character actor Alan Mowbray, who is the wealthy father of a party boy who loves whiskey and women more than anything else. But instead of talking about him, let me tell you what I don’t know, and maybe you can help fill in the blanks for the rest of us.

Producer M.K. Kandell paid for this movie, and as far as I can tell, did nothing else of note, before or after, in Hollywood. Helen Mitchell wrote the script, and was executive producer, and as far as I can tell, did nothing else in the motion picture world. Monaei Lindley, the wealthy girlfriend of our young party boy, acted in this motion picture after being in a comedy short and another independent movie, and was never again credited with anything in the motion picture industry.

I can tell you a little bit about the star, Sari Maritza, the girl from Georgia with the Ellie Mae Clampett Southern accent. Sari probably never set foot in Georgia. Sari Maritz was born in Tianjin, China. She was the daughter of a British Army Major, and was educated in England, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, so she was able to speak several languages fluently, . . . . with the possible exception of Georgia Southern English. After this movie she made one more, and then left the motion picture business, declaring that she discovered that she had no talent for acting.

In this story, a wealthy Chicago businessman sends his party-loving son Johnny to the lonely and arid desert of Tucson, Arizona to manage a gasoline station that is out of town and across the road from a waffle restaurant. Sari Maritz is ‘Waffles,’ the owner and operator of the roadside restaurant. Our other elusive actress, Monaei Lindley, is Johnny’s girlfriend from Chicago, and she joins Johnny on the train to Tucson, telling Johnny that she has enrolled in the University of Arizona at Tucson, just up the road from Johnny’s desert gasoline station, which is across the street from the Waffle restaurant. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
