Booze and a Bad Southern Accent
Well, some movies are enjoyed more if you just get into the story and don't think too much about the details. For instance, Alan Mowbray is a wealthy man from Chicago who has a son that likes nothing better than to party, get drunk and get put in jail. This is 1933 America and booze is prohibited, which means that it is easier than ever to find and get drunk on. So one day after papa bails his son out of jail again he decides to send him away to a place where it will be difficult to find any booze. Great . . . now where would that be? Papa decides to buy a gas station for his son in the remote Arizona desert . . . . right across the street from Arizona University in Tucson. All right, . . . I know what you are thinking . . . if you want to be far away from booze, you don't go near a college campus . . . but this is 1933 and the kids at Arizona University would be into their studies, not booze. Heh . . . the more things change, the more they stay the same. In prohibition America of 1933 college students think more about their studies than about getting drunk . . . right? . . . well, maybe not. Our booze-happy, girl-happy boy finds all the booze and trouble he can handle with his gas station in Arizona, finally winding up in a Mexican jail across the border with the college kids. What will it take to turn his life around and get him sober? Just a cute little peach from Georgia with a horrible Southern movie accent, that's all. In spite of the lack of logic when it comes to getting the boy away from alcohol, it is a good 1933 story with amazing shiny new gas pumps that antique picker Mike Wolfe would kill for. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter and maybe a cool beverage of choice (prohibition is over now, ya know) and enjoy the show.
