The Princess and the Exploding Cigars

Legendary motion picture comedian Edgar Kennedy appeared in his first movie in 1911, when motion pictures were still and experimental toy. With almost 500 motion picture appearances before his death in 1948, he must surely be counted as one of the most famous comedy personalities of all time. In this story he is the side-kick of the crooner romantic male lead, and it is his wit and facial comedy, along with the sour-pus face of Franklin Pangborn, that provide many of the belly-laughs that this movie provides. The year is 1934 . . . America, and indeed most of the civilized world is in the deepest part of a global Depression . . . Money is rare, jobs are non-existent, and there is little reason to laugh. Fortunately, those who could afford ten cents in September of that year could spend an hour away from the grinding reality of daily life and enjoy a marvelous combination of slapstick comedy, including a box full of exploding cigars and button-hole flowers squirting water, mixed with a love story between a penniless show-business singer and the Princess daughter of a tiny European Kingdom. Show business promoter Kelly (Guy Robertson) is on board a ship headed to the European Kingdom of Belgardia with a bevy of young beauties and a contract to perform for the King. When he meets the Princess of Belgardia aboard ship, who is pretending to be commoner Catherine Bell, he immediately falls in love, and although the Princess loves him, she must not tell him who she really is, and they part when the ship docks. There are plenty of mixed-up circumstances and complications that evolve for them both, as you can imagine. Their road to 'happily ever after' will be filled with mix-ups and complications . . . and exploding cigars. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show . . . today it won't even cost you the dime that it took to see it way back then.
