The Slave Girl, The Teacher, and the Big Bully

She was the long-time secretary of Bishop Charles F. Buddy, the first Roman Catholic Bishop of the new Diocese of San Diego. Her car license plate was ECILA, and few knew that it was an homage to her most memorable motion picture role.

Mary Pickford and Walt Disney were planning to produce a combination of live action with added animation for a new motion picture, but in May of 1933 Paramount Pictures purchased the movie rights to the story they were going to use, and their version of the famous book was never made.

Paramount Pictures, after buying the rights from the author of the story, was preparing to film a big-budget blockbuster movie, and they already had signed W.C. Fields, Cary Grant, and Gary Cooper. They only needed the leading lady, and they wanted a fresh, new face. After nearly seven thousand screen tests, nineteen-year-old Charlotte Henry was selected to become the star of the 1933 “Alice in Wonderland.”

Charlotte Henry was praised for her role in the 1933 Christmas release, but the movie was a big flop at the box office. And her cryptic license plate? If you hold it up to a looking glass, as Alice in Wonderland would have, you will understand.

In this adventure, the Civil War has ended, and the Government has offered every veteran of the war a plot of land to begin a new life on, using some of the federal lands in states like Indiana. Unfortunately, when a group of war veterans arrives in the valley where they were promised a free plot of government land, they discover that three townsmen have taken over the land and have become wealthy. These men will drive away the war veterans any way that they can so they can keep their wealth and their land.

Charlotte Henry is a ‘bound girl,’ forced to work for one of the wealthy landowners for room and board until she is of age. When a new schoolteacher comes to town, he falls in love with Hannah, the bound girl, but if he makes public his affection for the slave girl, he will lose not only his job, but possibly his very life. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
