The Last of the Berkeys

In the mid 1800's Stephen Berkey immigrated to the Philadelphia area from Switzerland and had 10 children before his wife died. He re-married and had another 11 kids, including David King Berkey in 1888, my grandpap. David had one daughter and three sons. One of my uncles never married or had kids, Uncle Tommy had one son who had only one daughter, and he is no longer with us. My dad had 5 girls and two boys . . . but my older brother David was ill from birth and died at the age of 21. There are plenty of Berkey's around the country today that can trace their heritage to Stephen, but I'm the last of the Berkey's from one branch and as I have no children, I guess I'm the last of the Berkey's . . . kinda. This all flew to the front of my thoughts as I met the Last of the Clintons . . . Jed Clinton, played by character actor Victor Potel. And after all that . . . this fellow Jed Clinton is not the central player, but only a very marginal character in this law man vs the cattle rustlers adventure. Legendary actor Harry Carey is the man in black "Trigger" Carson, pretending to be an outlaw so that he can join the cattle rustlers and help the ranchers, but form the beginning the rustlers don't trust him, or even the crusty old timer Jed 'donkey ears' Clinton who tags along. As our story begins we watch Trigger Carson being ambushed by a handful of rustlers and the lead flies fast and hot in one of the best shoot-outs I've seen in a cowboy western. Old Jed Clinton happens along and joins Trigger Carson and soon saves his life when one of the rustlers sneaks up behind them and is ready to shoot Trigger Carson dead. Trigger Carson walks a thin line as he tries to help the good guys and pretend to be a rustler, and when the going gets tough, old donkey ears Clinton comes to his rescue just in the nick of time. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
