Irresistible Myrna Loy

"Always, when an outlaw loves a woman . . . she brings him bad luck." The notorious Robin Hood like bandito El Malo says this several times during this adventure, and his side kick Pedro also repeats the thought . . . . but both fall for a pretty skirt knowing that only disaster will follow. Ahhh . . . . how weak even strong men are in the presence of a beautiful woman. In the small Rio Grande town of Sierra Blanca we meet El Malo, the celebrated bandit who is robbing the town's mayor and banker Seth Landport. The bandit is honest enough to leave an I.O.U. for the stolen money with the mayor and after giving some of the money to a poor woman in a house nearby rides off into the night. Next we visit the local cantina where a new girl is about to sing and dance her way into the hearts of the crowd - the lovely Carmita from Argentina, played by the lovely Myrna Loy, who at the age of 25 is as devastatingly seductive as she ever would be. Myrna Loy was discovered by Natcha Rambova, the wife of famous silent screen actor Rudolph Valentino. Her first on screen appearance was a bit part in a Natacha Rambova movie as a vamp. Myrna Loy is one of the few actors who started in silent movies and when talkies came along turned a good career into a legendary one. And my first look at her close ups in this early adventure leaves no doubt in my mind as to why. The story plot is amazingly well thought out for a 1930 talkie, and you will enjoy the surprising twists, but let me tell you about the bandits and the women who conquered them. Pedro, the side kick, meets Dolores in the cantina, a pretty Spanish girl who he hasn't seen for a few years. She gets him to buy her expensive shots of water, and when she admires his new watch he tells her that his old watch mysteriously disappeared the last time they were together. Of course, Pedro discovers that his new watch is gone after the night is over - and he still goes back for more. Sigh . . . . sometimes it's tough being a man in a world of superior women. But Pedro isn't the first to fall for a pretty face, his boss the bandit El Malo spots Myrna Loy singing in the cantina. El Malo is with a blonde girl in the cantina telling her that he has no time for her because women and outlaws do not mix, just as beautiful Carmita comes out and starts singing. His eyes light up and he is instantly smitten with Carmita, and we quickly know that the end is near, and this might not end well for the famed bandit. But have no fear, guys, for just as Carmita is no ordinary woman, El Mal is no ordinary bandit. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter drizzled on it and enjoy the show.
