The Movie that Gone With The Wind Couldn't Kill

So . . . how could the MGM 1939 blockbuster Gone with the Wind kill a 1931 movie from Tiffany Studios? The motion picture Gone with the Wind may be responsible for the greatest loss of early motion pictures that there ever was. Here's how it happened: Tiffany Pictures was started in 1921 by husband and wife team Mae Murray and Robert Z. Leonard, but they divorced in 1925, and the studio's future was in jeopardy, possibly much like the divorce of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz doomed the Desilu Studios. Anyway, that was not all of the problems for Tiffany Pictures . . . they were sued by the New York City jewelry store, and the studio that supplied movies to almost 2,500 theaters each week went bankrupt in 1932. MGM purchased all of the highly flammable nitrate movie prints in the Tiffany collection, and guess what they did with them? Preserve them for history? Naw . . . . they weren't that smart back then . . . when Gone with the Wind was being filmed and the director needed a huge fire to show the burning of Atlanta, some nit-wit had the great idea to pile up all of the highly flammable films from the Tiffany Pictures collection that was gathering dust in a warehouse! That is correct . . . when you watch the burning of Atlanta in Gone with the Wind, you are watching the destruction of hundreds of Tiffany Pictures films, never again to be seen by anyone. Thanks to a few private copies that actors and directors kept a couple of Tiffany Pictures survived, and this is one of them. Small town blonde Helen Hudson, played by Bessie Love, goes to the big city to make her fortune, and does indeed become well-off by becoming the mistress of a powerful businessman. She gathers her girlfriends together every time the businessman needs to entertain clients at wild parties, and they entertain the guys. Things get very dicey one day when a big, wild party is scheduled and Helen gets unexpected company . . . first her sainted mother and loves-to-get-drunk father pop in for a surprise visit a few hours before the party is to begin . . . then her old school boyfriend who wants desperately to marry her also arrives just in time to discover that his long-lost love is a party girl. The poop is about to hit the fan, and all bets are off, but fear not, gentle friends, because even though this is a pre-code story and anything might happen, the ending will be a happy one :~) Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show that Gone with the Wind failed to kill.
