Beware a Woman Scorned
When I watch a movie about sailors on a ship out of Singapore headed for Manila, and discover that the plot revolves around a First Mate who runs an insurance scam that sinks every ship he is on for a share of the insurance loot, you figure that it will be a manly story with men fighting men and maybe a girl in the port, but not on the ship. Wow, how wrong could I be? There are two sexy women in this story, and in spite of the really, really bad guy Barstow, played by the usually soft and fuzzy Noah Beery, the naughty dance girl is the master of this tale. Barstow is hired to be First Mate on a ship headed for Singapore and then Manila, and when he boards the ship he spies Mary (Miriam Seegar), the lovely blonde daughter of the captain and decides immediately that she will be his. Ahhh . . . but evil First Mate Barstow has a dance hall girl in Singapore who is his girl, and he needs to dump her first. But Concha (Dorothy Burgess) will not be 'dumped' so easily. She tells Barstow that he may be finished with her, but she is not finished with him. Now, if Barstow had any brains at all, he would have just walked away and disappeared from the whole scene, but you guys know that when it comes to women we just don't always think properly. He pays no attention to Concha and heads back to his ship and blonde Mary. Concha stows away aboard ship and after they leave Singapore she comes out of hiding and presents herself to Barstow and the crew. Here is where the real danger and doom begin . . . naughty dancer Concha and blonde beauty Mary become friends . . . Barstow is now in more danger than he could ever imagine! I must stop here, because I am sorely tempted to reveal the dastardly method that Concha uses to give Barstow what he deserves, but it is so unusual and so unique that I must allow you the immense pleasure of watching it unfold before your very eyes. Pop a really big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
