Reluctant Father

We travel to the exotic South Seas islands for an adventure with two rough and tumble Americans running a pearl diving outfit who are forced to raise a young boy and try to keep him away from his real mother. How do two hard-drinking adventurers wind up with a baby boy that they are not related to? Well, one night when big Jim Wilson (Johnny Mack Brown) visits a bar he runs into really bad dude Sheldon (Ralph Ince) who a year ago gambled with him and cheated him out of his entire pearl harvest. This year Jim catches Sheldon cheating and after beating him up in a rousing bar fight takes his winnings and leaves the bar. Outside is a lady who is being attacked by a drunken sailor, and Jim tosses the drunken sailor away from the girl and when she offers to take him upstairs to her room he follows, expecting a good time. Once he gets into her room he discovers that she is an unwed mother with a young baby boy. It turns out that bad guy Sheldon is the father, and after running away to the South Seas with him and having his baby he deserted them both to live on the streets and fend for themselves. Jim offers to pay her way back to America, but she cannot return home with a baby boy and no husband or marriage certificate. Jim then offers to marry her so that with her marriage certificate in hand her parents will take her back into the family, on the condition that as soon as she is settled back in America she gets a divorce. Neat little plan, and a generous gesture from a hard-drinking, bar fighting pearl businessman, but of course everything that can go wrong will go wrong. Before she can leave town bad guy Sheldon steals the ticket and the money and a big valuable black pearl that Jim gave her, and when she chases Sheldon into the streets to get her ticket and money back a taxi cab runs over her, and she lies in a coma in the local hospital for weeks. Jim doesn't know any of this, so when they bring the baby to him and tell him that the mother is missing he assumes that she has pulled a con on him and deserted her baby. Jim and his partner Shorty take the baby back to their South Seas Island and raise it as their own, and when the baby's mother Eve (Dorothy Burgess) gets out of the hospital she becomes a saloon girl to try to work her way to the area that Jim is in and find her baby boy. Unfortunately bad guy Sheldon is not out of the picture yet, and he will bring death and destruction to the mix before Eve can be reunited with her little boy. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
