Reading the Will

Buckle up my friends, we are in for a good old-fashioned murder mystery in a dark mansion with many suspects and victims. Old man Silas Wayne, played by early motion picture director William V. Mong, is a lonely and disgruntled millionaire with plenty of scheming relatives who want to inherit his fortune. Tonight the old man has called all of his relatives to the mansion and intends to read his last will and testament to them, and then sign it in front of them. We soon meet the man that we think will be the villain/killer in the story, Claude Wayne (Eddie Phillips), who serves as old man Wayne's secretary. He is replacing a huge and valuable diamond in the library safe with a paste duplicate, but old man Wayne discovers the treachery and finds out that Claude is the culprit. The cagey old fellow has plans that I think will put everyone in their place, and I eagerly await the old guy's triumph as he gathers everyone in the library . . . including two big burly policemen that he invited at the last minute with instructions that someone will be arrested before the night is over. Alas, before our crabby old fart can have his fun with his last will and testament and his relatives, he is killed by a knife to the heart in front of seven relatives and two policemen . . . and we cannot figure out who did the deed. Enter Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania born Regis Toomey as Detective Sergeant Mitchell, and a nosey girl reporter (June Clyde) nick-named 'Nosey' by Mitchell, who will play off of Toomey with wit and comedy like Myrna Loy played off of William Powell in the Thin Man mysteries. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with lots of warm melted butter on it because it will be a long and scary night in the Wayne mansion.
