Yale, Ohio State and U.C.L.A Football

Howard Harding Jones played football in college at Yale University from 1905-1907 on three national title winning teams, and went on to coach not only at Yale but at Syracuse, Ohio State, and famously at the University of Southern California, coaching in 5 Rose Bowls and 4 national championships for U.C.L.A. In 1933 he was about to coach U.C.L.A. to its third national championship when the movie moguls of Hollywood convinced him to appear in this Mickey McGuire football comedy short. Mickey McGuire, played by Mickey Rooney, is getting ready to play Stinky Davis in the big neighborhood football game, and Stinky has a real coach teaching his pals how to win. Kit Guard, famous for his cowboy western appearances, is coaching the Stinky team, and Mickey is afraid that they won't be able to win the game unless they can get a real coach . . . . And here comes the real U.C.L.A. championship coach Howard Jones to save the day. After giving Mickey's team some advice on winning the game the kids are ready for anything . . . until Stinky Davis frames Mickey for shooting off the town cannon and disturbing the peace and Mickey is kept at the police station during the game. Mickey's team needs him badly but there is nothing that can be done to get him out of the police station and back in the game . . . unless Coach Howard Jones once again can enter the picture and save the day, getting Mickey out of the police station and into the game just in the nick of time to make the winning touchdown! Pop a little bowl of white kernel popcorn with a bit of real melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
