Opium, Horse Racing and the Vicar

It took me a minute to understand the 1935 British slang 'Joy Flips' - and I've always been a bit confused about the terms for British money, but there was no confusion when I saw that the Vicar felt he could not be involved with horse racing, brewers or gambling. The only thing I needed to look up to understand was the laudanum that Wilkins the butler put in some horse feed. In 1935 England Laudanum was a common drug that folk bought, sometimes called 'poppy tea' - containing opium powder dissolved in alcohol - opium powder contains morphine and codeine, which are among the most potent narcotics known to man. In this early Will Hay comedy he is a town Vicar who tries to raise a thousand pounds to repair the church steeple, and he gets maneuvered into promising to donate 250 pounds himself if only three other people will do the same. Of course, as a Vicar he is against horse racing, gambling and beer brewers, but thanks to others he finds himself mixing company with all three. His sister returns to town and is half owner of a race horse that will soon race in the derby, and the other half of the horse is owned by a beer brewer. If that isn't bad enough, three beer brewers come up with the three contributions of 250 pounds, and now poor Vicar Jedd must somehow find his promised 250 pounds. It seems that the only way for him to turn his meager savings into enough money is to bet it all on Dandy Dick, his sister's horse that is running in the Derby. And that is when we spot the laudanum, pinched from the chemist by his butler Wilkins. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with lots of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
