Okay . . . . I'm going to tell you a secret . . . . not a Navy Secret, but I'm going to tell you who is and who is not a spy in this pre-World War II spy vs. spy thriller. Watch for the cab driver and the boy on a bicycle . . . . they are just about the only people in this motion picture who are NOT spies . . . oh, and probably the cop in the park . . . but I'm not sure about him. Yup, . . . honest injun . . . everyone except them is a spy. Here is what you will not know until much closer to the romantic end . . . who is spying on whom? Everyone is looking over their shoulder for other spies, and nobody trusts anybody, and that envelope . . . that mysterious envelope that positively everyone wants so badly. Fay Wray skyrocketed to fame in 1933 as a result in the epic King Kong movie, and now six years later in 1939 she stars in this spy adventure with Grant Withers. Talk about your 'loose lips' . . . Fay Wray doesn't skip a beat when her boyfriend is put in the brig and Grant Withers shows up and wants to take her out for the evening. She is all in and ready for action with Withers without much hesitation. Now, I guess if the movie promotional tag lines give her part away, I should also. The promotion for this movie went something like: A Nervy Navy Girl Succeeds in a Game of Death Where Men Failed! Okay, now we know that heart-throb movie star Fay Wray is not a spy for the enemy . . . but that is about all that we know. Early on in the movie her Navy boyfriend is put in the brig and Grant Withers, pretending to be his buddy Chief Petty Officer Steve Roberts, tags up with Fay Wray and they are off in the night for a good fish dinner and the chance to fall in love. Grant Withers, as Steve Roberts, has a mysterious sealed envelope that he claims her boyfriend gave him to deliver to someone, but no one seems to know who. It possibly contains rare stamps that her old boyfriend liked to collect and sell, but we suspect that it contains Navy Secrets. German is already at war in Europe and enemy German spies would love to have a new range finder invention that the Navy is developing. We know that the good guys will win in the end, but just who are the good guys? Bullets will fly, the mysterious envelope will appear and disappear quite regularly, and cowboy movie veteran I. Stanford Jolley will wait tables in the fish restaurant and spill soup on one of the spies in an attempt to get that envelope. Possibly the most exciting scene for me personally is the scene in the park where gorgeous Fay Wray munches on a bag of popcorn while Grant Withers tries in vain to ride a bicycle. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled on it and munch along with Fay Wray as we discover who is naughty and who is nice.
