The Whistling Shadow

Papa was a preacher from Swiss Mennonite heritage, and that made him a conservative man who was not yet born when the Azusa Street Revival took place, but as a young adult he and his girlfriend Mae went to a 'Foursquare' church, where they were influenced by the new phenomenon of 'speaking in tongues' that was sweeping areas America. Sharing the Pentecostal message with everyone he met became his passion as he and Mae shepherded several small churches in Western Pennsylvania. That made me an odd-ball youngster among the rest of the kids, a 'holy-roller' who was not allowed to go to movies or school dances. When I left home as a young adult I started making my own judgements on right and wrong, and I started going to the occasional movie theater. The first movie that sticks in my memory as a blockbuster story that blew my mind was "Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark". In this thrilling adventure a meek and unassuming professor of archeology travels the world in search of a great treasure. It is the pre-World War II time of Hitler and the Nazi era, and they are the bad guys in the adventure. With his superior intellect and a sharp whip the archeology professor outwits all the bad guys. What an original and thrilling story . . . . Forty years before that movie was released, as World War II was raging, British actor Leslie Howard produced a movie taking place a couple of years earlier in pre-war Germany when the Nazi regime was rising in power. He is Professor Horatio Smith, an absent-minded professor of archeology at Cambridge . . . . the meek and timid kind of fellow that no one would suspect of being the most daring and cunning shadowy legend that is spiriting scientists and learned men imprisoned by the Nazis out of Germany and into freedom in England. With a mysterious whistle and a cryptic note men who are wanted by the Gestapo disappear without a trace from every part of Germany while the timid professor keeps digging in the dirt for ancient relics. He doesn't use a whip, and no giant boulders chase him, but with the legendary wit, humor, romance and daring that mark great British stories. Two years after making this ani-Nazi movie, with World War II still raging over Europe, Leslie Howard was on a plane flying from Lisbon, Portugal to Bristol, England that was shot down over the ocean by a Luftwaffe fighter plane. Pop a really big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
