The Call Girls and the Lady with the Million Dollar Legs

Gene Kelly was one of the best dancers to ever grace the silver screen. During an interview, when asked what he would like to see engraved on his gravestone, he replied, “Here lies Gene Kelly. He danced with Cyd Charisse.” When Arthur Freed, producer of “Singing in the Rain” was preparing the blockbuster finalĂ© dance scene for Gene Kelly, he wanted Gene’s dance partner to be “someone who could stop a man just sticking up her leg,” and Cyd Charisse was that woman. During the height of her movie career, MGM insured her legs for a million dollars.

Tula Ellice Finklea was born in Amarillo, Texas in 1922. Her little brother couldn’t pronounce the word ‘Sis’ when talking about his big sister, and it always came out as ‘Syd’ instead. She had a mild case of polio when she was six years old, and to help build the muscles in her legs she began dancing lessons. At the age of seventeen she eloped with her dance teacher Nico Charisse and adopted the screen name of Syd Charisse.

In this adventure, Syd Cahrisse is an uncredited dancer in a strip joint who dances an amazing Flamenco number. Silent screen star Betty Compson is Ruth Ashley, the madame who owns a nightclub and escort service for lonely men. Her daughter has been away at school, and has no idea that mommy runs an escort service for call girls.

Problems will arise when the young girl’s boyfriend, working for the District Attorney, investigates her mother’s business and the daughter discovers that her mother is a madame. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
