The Love of Music, and the Music of Love

As our small town adventure opens Doctor Christian is visiting an unmarried woman who is playing piano while her young son is playing a violin. The young lady married a famous concert violinist after a whirlwind romance in Paris. Unfortunately, because of the hordes of young ladies swooning over her new husband she ran away and divorced him.

Now, twelve years later, Mary, played by Fay Wray, has a young son who is becoming a great violinist, like his father. Of course, his father has no idea that he has a son. Circumstances will conspire, as they often do in movies, and when a small airplane crashes in the little town of Rivers End, the passenger turns out to be the famous concert violinist.

The young boy playing the part of their son is Schuyler Standish, who was thirteen years old as the movie was filmed. Between movies he was a college student at U.C.L.A. majoring in music. Schuyler began playing violin at the age of three, and when you watch him play violin in this story, it is really him playing the violin.

Three years after this movie, in 1944, he joined the Air Force and entertained World War Two troops as part of the Bobby Byrne band. Sometime after the war his passion switched from music to art, and he taught art at the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy from 1972 until retiring in 2002. Many of his paintings were exhibited in museums and galleries.

One other actor that you might remember from 1960’s television is Irene Ryan, who famously acted as Granny on the Beverly Hillbillies situation comedy. In this story she is the young blonde music teacher who competes against Fay Wray for students. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
