Harry James and The Andrews Sisters Go to War

In addition to sharing movies from the early days of Hollywood, I also share music from the first years of recorded sound on Free-Classic-Music.com, and some of my favorite music was played by the swing band leaders of the 1930’s and 1940’s. I find it impossible to stay in a bad mood when I listen to the Glenn Miller Orchestra or Harry James and His Music Makers. My feet are tapping the floor and my mood is heading to the stars before the second song begins.

I try to be as open and transparent as I can be, and anyone browsing around my sites can easily find the phone number of my mobile phone. One Saturday morning in the late fall of 2015, as I was sitting at my laptop working on another movie to upload, my phone rang. The man who had called asked if I was Jimbo, and I told him that I was.

He said that he was Harry James Jr., and wanted to thank me for sharing his father’s music with the world. We had several conversations after that morning, and I learned that Frank Sinatra was his Godfather. One evening while Harry James and his wife, jazz singer Louise Tobin, were having dinner in a New Jersey restaurant, Louise Tobin heard Sinatra singing in the back-room bar area. She convinced her husband to go back and listen to him, and Harry James signed Frank Sinatra to his first singing contract on the spot.

In December of 1941, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States went to war, both in Europe and in the Pacific Ocean. Hollywood immediately began churning out movies that would encourage us to join the war effort, and in June of 1942, this enlistment adventure hit the movie theaters.

In this story, Harry James and His Music Makers are drafted into the Army, along with the Andrews Sisters. Together they performed the hit music of the day, as they worked their way from nightclub to boot camp to shipboard, heading for battle. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
