The Killer and the Lady with Nothing to Hide

As far as I can tell, only one man was able to shove a dish of pistachio ice cream firmly into the face of Lon Chaney Jr. at a banquet and get away with it.

Evelyn Ankers, pronounced ee-voo-lynn, was born in Chile to British parents, but was raised in England. On the eve of World War Two in 1939, the young actress left England for the States, and was soon acting in Hollywood movies. She was most often seen in horror movies, often as the leading lady to Lon Chaney Jr.

In 1942 Evelyn was engaged to actor Glenn Ford, but after meeting actor Richard Denning, she dumped Glenn Ford and eloped to Las Vegas with Richard Denning while he was filming a movie. After completing that movie, Richard Denning joined the Navy, and was commissioned as a First Class Petty Officer in the submarine service.

When he got out of the Navy, neither Richard or Evelyn could find acting work, so they lived in a trailer on the beach, tending to lobster traps in the nearby ocean. They ate well, and made enough money to get by, and later called those months the happiest days of their lives.

Shortly after Richard Denning joined the Navy the studios had a dinner party to put movie magazine writers next to the studio horror stars, and along with Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, George Zucco and others, was Lon Chaney Jr.

Next to Lon Chaney Jr. was his frequent co-star Evelyn Ankers, and next to her was her husband Richard Denning. During the banquet, Lon Chaney Jr. began quietly hurling verbal insults at the husband of his co-star Evelyn Ankers, but her husband ignored them, knowing that Chaney had probably had too much to drink. But when Lon Chaney Jr. insulted Richard Denning for still being in Los Angeles while World War Two was raging in Europe and the Pacific, it was more than First Class Petty Officer Richard Denning, wearing his Navy blues, could endure.

He picked up his dish of ice cream and jammed it solidly into Lon Chaney Jr’s face. Someone nearby quickly grabbed the angry actor with a face full of pistachio green ice cream and prevented him from tossing his hot cup of coffee into the face of Richard Denning.

When Richard Denning was hired to act as the Governor of Hawaii for the hit 1968 television show ‘Hawaii Five-0’, Richard and his wife Evelyn Ankers moved to Haiku on the island of Maui, and lived the rest of their lives there.

In this murder mystery, Evelyn Ankers is burlesque queen Crystal McCoy, who is the Queen of the Burlesque theater, and in love with a brash young newspaper reporter who wants to write the Great American Novel. Along with Evelyn Ankers and actress Marion Martin, real burlesque entertainers are featured, including headline entertainer Rosina DePella, who used the stage name of Rose La Rose in her burlesque act, and the name Blossom Terrain in this murder mystery. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
