No Fuss, No Excitement, . . . This is the Copa!

It was 1940, and New York City mob boss Frank Costello wanted to spend some of his cash on a fancy nightclub. Of course, he couldn’t put the club in his own name, so he hired Monte Proser to ‘own’ the nightclub. Prosser was a press agent for Mary Pickford, Walt Disney, the Ziegfeld Follies, and others.

The club was called the Copacabana, after the Copacabana neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. It was originally located at 10 East 60th street, and featured Portuguese décor, Latin music, and Chinese food, . . . and the legendary Copa Girls. Two years before this movie was filmed there, the Copa was being investigated for racketeering activities and tax evasion. Its visible ties to organized crime continued for several decades, but it didn’t seem to hurt the attendance any.

One night a decade after this movie was filmed there, baseball stars Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra and others took Billy Martin to the Copa to celebrate his birthday. Sammy Davis Jr. was the headline performer, and a drunken bowling team in the audience began heckling and berating Sammy Davis Jr. – Well, this led to that, and there was a full-blown brawl between the baseball players and the bowling team, with stories and headlines in newspapers around the city. Billy Martin was soon  traded away from the Yankees, but baseball fans know that he would return to the Yankees, many times.

In this cornball comedy Groucho Marx gets his girlfriend Carmen Miranda a job singing at the Copa. Well, I guess I should correct that, because he got her two jobs singing at the Copa. After singing Latin songs in the main room, Carmen Miranda must quickly change outfits and become a femme fatal French singer upstairs in the cocktail lounge. The deception goes well enough until a Hollywood movie producer comes to New York to hire the fictitious French lady. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
