Dames Dancing with Death

In 1942 the nineteen year old Richard Attenborough got his first acting job in the British World War II movie, In Which We Serve. Until his death in August of 2014 Lord Richard Attenborough spent the bulk of his time with motion pictures, stage and television productions acting, then directing and producing stories that have entertained the world. Lord Attenborough was never nominated for an Oscar as an actor, but he earned the Oscar for Best Picture when he produced the legendary movie Gandhi in 1982. In this crime noir adventure he is young taxi driver Ted Peters, who has a girlfriend working as an actress on the stage. It is 1947 London, and he is taking his girl to a private club to meet with his buddy Dave, who served with him in the military during the war years. Dave is now 'in the money,' spending cash like there is no end to his funds. Dave tells Ted that he can get the taxi driver into some serious cash if he wants to join up with the boss that is funding Dave's lavish lifestyle, but Ted refuses, content with his life as a cabbie. Later that night when Ted drives Dave across the river to a dance palace we watch Dave as he argues with the owner of the nightclub about a black market job that he helped with, and as he is leaving the nightclub he is shot in the back by the emcee of the nightclub, henchman Paul Baker. Mortally wounded, Dave staggers into the back seat of Ted's taxi cab while Ted is in a nearby pub hoisting a pint, and dies quietly in the back of the cab as Ted drives to the theater to pick up his girlfriend Joy after her show ends. When the dead buddy is discovered in the back seat of Ted's taxi, Ted Peters is suddenly thrust into the middle of a murder investigation by the New Scotland Yard. He encourages his girlfriend to get a job at the dance palace owned by the crime boss, and he is usually one step ahead of the Inspectors on the trail of the killer. Watch for the dance hall girl Annette with big blonde hair who helps girlfriend Joy get a job at the dance palace, it is a very young Diana Dors at the age of sixteen, in her second motion picture. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
