The Private Dick and the Blonde Bimbo

As this noir private eye adventure opens we meet tough-as-nails detective Dan Turner, played by William Marshall. I've watched my fair share of detective movies from the 1940's and I don't recall seeing this guy anywhere . . . He doesn't stand out in my memory as a legendary actor of the times . . . . One of my very favorite old movies that is not yet in the public domain is 1946 detective noir movie "The Big Sleep" with Humphrey Bogart and his gorgeous wife Lauren Bacall. A year later this movie hit the big screens, and it is a hard-boiled private eye movie with a similar, if even edgier style. Now, don't get me wrong . . . I am not comparing actor and director William Marshall with Humphrey Bogart . . . . Bogart was cool enough to marry one of the sexiest girls on the planet in the 1940's . . . But hey, William Marshall snagged Ginger Rogers as a wife . . . . . My admiration for him grows a bit . . . New York private eye Dan Turner is hired by a California rich guy to handle a blackmail case. One wouldn't think it difficult for the hired dick to arrive at the home of the man who hired him and get the dope on the case, but this fellow needs to successfully fight his way past the chauffeur and then ignore the butler who tries to refuse him entrance, and then face the gun barrel of the fellow who wanted to hire him . . . . Whew . . . . The action is coming fast and furious, and the information about what the heck is happening comes much slower. Throughout the story we are kept in the dark . . . We are given just enough facts to keep things intriguing but never enough to figure out what is going on and who the bad guy is. Ziggy Cranston, wealthy California entertainment mogul is being blackmailed by an old girlfriend who sings at a casino, but before he can hire the private eye to help him with the blackmail she is dead. . . Now as Ziggy is talking to the private dick a fellow interrupts them and continues the blackmail attempt and even raises the stakes from fifty thousand dollars to a hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Dan Turner is again in a fist fight with the new blackmailer and as the scoundrel has had enough and runs away he is shot in the back and falls lifeless into the swimming pool. This leads to that and when detective Dan handcuffs Ziggy because he believes that Ziggy shot the blackmailer, he takes him to a phone to call the cops . . . But when he, Ziggy and the copper return to the pool . . . The body is gone . . . The mystery deepens and the answers become even more elusive . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
