Lovers, Losers, Liars and the Killer

Sure, this is a murder drama, but for most of the movie I was reminded of the afternoon soap operas that I would watch as a young man during the times I was laid off from work or between jobs. Actually my first exposure to soap operas was as a youngster of ten or eleven. For some reason there were a couple of days after school when mom and dad were not home and I was instructed to go to a lady's house across the street and stay with her until mom and dad got home. This old gal was not a family friend or even acquaintance like the Taylor's next door, but I was always obedient, so over to her house I went. She was expecting me, and she let me in and I spent the next hour or so sitting next to her as she watched her soap operas, and she even explained to me some of the story lines, but my ten year old mind wasn't much interested in the problems of the characters on the television set that afternoon. It would take me another dozen years or more to cultivate an interest in the daily lives of other folk as they stumbled through life. In this soapy drama we meet a handful of characters who interact with each other in messy, scandalous, romantic and angry ways . . . . Just like the old soap operas. As the story opens two British military commandos, trained to kill with their bare hands, are out of the military and looking for work. Andy and Don are best friends, and Don is in love with Andy's sister Julie. They pop in to see Julie at her job, and Julie is very happy to see her brother and her boyfriend . . . . Until her boss Felix comes in. Felix is a slick fellow who owns a nightclub and several other businesses. Now, rich Felix is in love with Julie, but Julie is in love with Don, and things will get very 'soap-opera' messy, very quickly. Of course that leaves Julie's brother Andy without a love interest, until he meets blonde bomb-shell Jackie, a sexy nightclub singer that is ready to love anyone at the drop of a dime. We can easily see trouble ahead with this relationship. The story line is so complicated and convoluted that I hesitate to go much further with the description, but the action is fast and furious and will keep you guessing as to who will end up with whom, and of course who die at the hand of another of this cozy group. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
