The Golden Eyes of Mantan

Mantan Moreland’s father was a Dixieland band leader from Monroe, Louisiana. As a young teenager he ran away from home to join a traveling minstrel show. His legendary face mugging the audience was so natural and infectious that it made most people laugh just to see him. After working on the Vaudeville circuit and as a house comedian for Connie’s Inn Frolics in Harlem, he became a character actor in Hollywood movies.

Unlike most lovable character actors, because of his natural comic faces and actions, he often stole the scene from the leading characters. Moviegoers would forget Frankie Darro in is detective adventures, but always remember his side-kick Mantan Moreland. He could turn gut-wrenching fear into gut-busting belly laughs with just a wide-eyed glance. He may be best remembered as the chauffeur for Charlie Chan in fourteen Monogram Pictures movies.

In this adventure, like many movies he is part of, he will steal enough scenes that you will most likely remember him more than Roland Winters or female lead Wanda McKay, or any other actor in the story. A rancher and gold miner in Arizona seeks the help of famous Chinese detective Charlie Chan, because someone is trying to kill him.

Charlie Chan, his number two son, and chauffeur Mantan Moreland, as Birmingham Brown, head to a dude ranch next to the gold mine owned by the rancher that someone wants dead. The clues are elusive, but the inscrutable Chinese detective will certainly solve this mystery with the help of his chauffeur and his number two son. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
