The Bridal Suite and the Robot
I have just gotta be honest . . . I am a very happy fellow . . . but . . . I have watched so very many comedies that I rarely break out into loud laughter . . . maybe a smile now and then, but laugh out loud? . . . It just doesn't happen to me very often. I was taken by so much surprise at the goofy situations that arose in this hilarious comedy that I caught myself laughing out loud more times than I can ever remember. The funniest comedies are filled with unique characters, and this romantic romp is chock full of characters that continuously tickled my funny bone. Here is the setup, but the situations you will enjoy discovering on your own! Our story opens as we meet the nephew of wealthy Lady Mary and his gentleman's gentleman, played by Stanley Holloway. The nephew isn't good for much except spending money and having a good time, and he discovers this morning that his money is all gone for a while. He must find a job and get some money quickly, so when he sees an advertisement in the newspaper offering to handsomely pay a well-connected gentleman who is willing to have an adventure, Roger Cavendish, played by Nigel Patrick, and his gentleman's gentleman travel to the professor's home to accept the challenge and earn the cash that they badly need. Across town we meet the professor, a frizzy haired and forgetful scientist who has created the first completely robotic woman, who looks remarkably like his beautiful niece Penelope. The professor with the perfect woman robot needs a real life test for the robot to make sure it will work in the real world, so he is willing to pay our playboy and his gentleman's gentleman to escort the lady robot on an evening around town to see if the robot can fit into normal life or not. Now . . . I mentioned that the lady robot was modelled after the absent-minded professor's niece Penelope, played by Patricia Roc. Well, Penelope doesn't get out on the town much because the professor is always deep into scientific lectures and such, but tonight the professor has promised to put aside his studies and take his niece out to a party . . . except the forgetful professor has forgotten that he is to give a speech at a scientific meeting this same night . . . the night that Penelope wants so badly to go out on the town . . . the night that Roger and his gentleman's gentleman are to take the perfect woman robot out on the town . . . Yup . . . You can see where we are headed, right? What you cannot see or imagine are the amazingly hilarious situations that will arise on this night. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
