The Emperor’s Secret Spy and the Illiterate Fool

Our adventure opens in the small village of Rodney, in the countryside some distance from Buapest, during the rule of Napoleon. A frightened man runs frantically into the small village and demands to speak to his cousin the Mayor of Rodney. Cousin Gregor, mayor of a nearby village, tells the mayor of our small village that he was almost killed by a firing squad when an Inspector General visited his village looking for bribery and corruption.

Gregor’s cousin, mayor of our little village, asks the frightened man what this Inspector General looks like, so that they will not suffer the same fate. If they know what the Inspector General looks like, they can hide their corruption when he arrives and save their lives. Unfortunately, Napoleon’s Inspector General is a man of mystery. No one knows what he looks like.

In another small village nearby, we watch as a wandering gypsy peddler tries to sell his magic health potion to the naïve crowd, with the help of his foolish illiterate assistant, Georgi, played by singer/comedian Danny Kaye. When the foolish but good-hearted Georgi tries to warn an old peasant woman about the phony elixir, the wandering gypsy medicine man and his foolish assistant are run out of town.

The wandering gypsy is so angry at his foolish assistant that he sends him on his way, and the fool wanders off in search of a scrap of food to fill his empty belly. The foolish peasant, in rags and very hungry, wanders into the little village or Rodney, where almost everyone is watching for a stranger who might be the Inspector General for Emperor Napoleon. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
