The Eagle, the Mushrooms, and the Wood Shed

As our adventure opens we meet saloon owner and cheating card player Ace Gibson, played by Morris Ankrum. The fellow he is playing cards with proves that he has cheated, so Ace Gibson shoots him, and all his henchmen in the saloon back him up that it was a justified killing. Then Ben Pendleton, an old miner from outside the town rushes into the saloon and heads to the bar. He is carrying several large nuggets dotted with rich gold . . . . After many years of searching, he has found a wealthy vein of gold.

The Sheriff advises him not to drink the free whiskey that Ace Gibson is offering him so that he doesn’t get drunk and tell everyone where he made his strike. The miner takes the Sheriff’s advice and leaves the saloon to head back to his small cabin in the hills.

Meanwhile, Ace Gibson sends his henchmen to follow the miner and capture him and force him to reveal the location of his mine. Unfortunately, the miner is a pretty good fighter and gets away from the ambush and makes it to the safety of his cabin. The henchmen are hot on his trail though, and soon they are shooting it out with the miner. In desperation, after being shot a couple of times, the miner knows that he will soon die, so he quickly scribbles a cryptic note and puts it into the middle of a large sales catalogue before he dies.

Now we discover that the miner’s only living relatives are a young lady who is a niece, and Hoppy’s sidekick California Carlson, who is a distant cousin. Hopalong Cassidy, Lucky and California head to the miner’s shack to see if they can find the gold mine, and they discover the young niece . . . . And the same henchmen that killed the miner. Their lives are in great danger from Ace and his henchmen, and no one can figure out the secret of the note that the dying miner scribbled. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
