Cattle Rustlers and the Cowgirl
Thanks to my love for sharing the movies made in the early days of Hollywood, I have been honored to meet many fine friends who not only enjoyed those movies, but also have met and shared stories of meeting some of the actors that millions of people still enjoy watching today.
Mike Newton is a classic movie buff living on the western edge of Ohio who shares the memories of his friendship with Jennifer Holt, who appears for the first time on the big screen in this adventure. Mike discovered Ms. Holt's mailing address from another movie fan and sent her a letter asking if she would sign a penny arcade postcard bearing a photo of her. Jennifer responded and soon a warm friendship evolved as the 'pen-pals' wrote back and forth.
Finally in 1990 Jennifer, who had been living in Mexico, agreed to appear in Asheville, North Carolina for a movie convention. The convention was in November, near her birthday, and by coincidence near Mike's birthday also.
Mike created a birthdyay gift for Jennifer that was a large scrapbook with movie ads and memorabilia that he had collected featuring Jennifer Holt, her actor brother Tim Holt, and their actor father Jack Holt.
Before Jennifer Holt's death in 1997 she sent Mike a large collection of family memorabilia, because she considered Mike the best friend she had. She enclosed with the treasure of family keepsakes a photo of herself with the inscription, "My Dear Mike, . . . . the Keeper of the Flame." Mike became acquainted with Sandra Holt, wife of Tim's middle son Jay, and Bryanna, Tim Holt's daughter, and gave the collection of family memorabilia to them.
Hopalong Cassidy producer Harry Sherman would not permit Jennifer to be credited as Jennifer Holt, but rather forced her to be known as Jacqueline Holt, hoping to gain name recognition with her famous father Jack Holt.
This is the only screen apperance that she had that did not feature her as Jennifer Holt. I am wondering if there were other matters of conflict between the two, because this is the only Hopalong Cassidy movie that I have seen so far that does not contain at least one close-up shot of the leading lady.
In thJennifer Holt is the young daughter of a rancher that is having all his cattle rustled by the local outlaws, so Hopalong Cassidy and friends come to her aid. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
