The Heiress, the Killer and the Ghost

Ann Carrington is about to turn 21 years old and she is the daughter of a very wealthy businessman . . . The thing is . . . She has never seen her father or mother . . . You got that right . . . She was born in China and her parents left her there when they returned to America soon after her birth. Yeah, and I thought my family was weird . . . I think that maybe the kind of perfect family that some movies and tv programs show are more fiction that fact . . . I think that weird is 'normal' for just about every family . . . Anyway . . . Back to Ann Carrington, played by Carole Landis. Finally, after twenty years in China, Ann's father contacts her and asks her to come home . . . Her mother has passed, and now he wants to meet his daughter, and tell her that on her 21st birthday she will inherit all of his wealth. As our adventure opens Ann and her girlfriend Gail are in a taxi on their way to Carrington Manor, and a figure dressed in black is hiding behind a tree along the road. The person in black fires a rifle and blows out one of the tires on the taxi and it careens out of control and crashes. Luckily Ann and Gail and the cab driver survive, and the two girls start walking up the road, and who should come along but Topper . . . Meek, mild mannered banker Cosmo Topper, with his chauffeur Eddie (Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, Jack Benny's comedy side-kick). Topper takes the girls to the Carrington mansion, which happens to be his next door neighbor. Ann and Gail meet Ann's father and the creepy household servants, and at the end of the long day Ann and Gail are shown to their bedrooms to retire for the night. When Gail sees the bedroom that heiress Ann has, she is jealous, and Ann magnanimously invites Gail to stay in her room, and Ann will sleep in Gail's room . . . And that is the key to the whole adventure. The figure in black who shot out their taxi tire enters Ann's darkened bedroom and kills the girl in the bed that the killer believes is heiress Ann. Gail is now dead, but her ghost rises and goes next door to Cosmo Topper, the meek banker who is the only person in the world who can see Gail the Ghost. Together they go in search of the killer, and after laughs a-plenty Gail the Ghost and her banker buddy Topper finally figure out who is trying to kill heiress Ann before she can turn 21 and inherit her fortune. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
