The Magic in Symbols

Men and women will die for an idea . . . For a way of life. . . . For a symbol. . . . For centuries the flag of a nation has been a symbol worth dying for, because it represents more than cloth. . . . It represents the loyalty of a peoples to their nation, their home, their families and their heritage. In May of 1940 World War II was raging through Europe and Belgium was being attacked and overrun by the enemy. The only surviving airplanes of the Belgium Air Force were parked in a farm field on the Flemish coast . . . . The last five fighter planes in Belgium. . . . . Did I mention that this is a true story? . . . . Filmed in 1943, while the war was still raging . . . . When moviegoers first saw this movie it was current events . . . It was not a story of long ago, but the events of yesterday. The Air Force men and their final five airplanes were ordered to prepare to meet the enemy that would quickly arrive at the farm. The five planes would be flown to England to fight another day, and the remaining men would prepare to surrender and become prisoners of war. Their regimental flag had the names of brave Belgian fighters on it, and the enemy would search for that flag and target the men named on it. Major Lessart (the real name of the Major and the other men has been changed because this is a true story and the war is still raging) decides that the regimental flag must never fall into the hands of the enemy, so it is hidden where the enemy will never find it. All goes as planned, but later one of the escaped pilots of the last Air Force planes who is now in England decides that he must return to the occupied area of Belgium and recover that regimental flag. The Belgian Air Force pilot will need to travel through enemy controlled territory to find and recover that flag, and then travel back through the same enemy territory to safety in England. He doesn’t have one dog-gone chance in a million of succeeding, but he will risk his life for that flag. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
