Texas Rangers, $40 a Month and Free Taps When You Die

What does it take to turn a good man bad? Young Tim Mason and his sister run a ranch on the Texas border with Mexico. He has borrowed money from the town rich-guy and now he cannot pay it back. The town rich-guy is our villain, and he is a gun-runner, smuggling all kinds of firearms over the Mexican border to sell in Mexico. He intends to foreclose on the ranch and use it as a safe passageway to Mexico for his smuggling operation. The day before he wants to foreclose, something happens that will change his mind.

Texas Ranger Hopalong Cassidy and his pals arrive in town and tell Tim that his application to become a Texas Ranger has been accepted and he will soon join the forces of good over evil. Our rich-guy gunrunner decides that he can blackmail the soon-to-be Texas Ranger with the mortgage over the ranch and convince the new Texas Ranger to actually protect his shipments passing through the ranch land on the way to Mexico, and it seems to be working . . . The good young man may be forced into being an accomplice to smuggling.

What does it take to turn a good man bad? In a strange turn of events, when Hoppy tries to help the new young Texas Ranger into telling the truth about why he seems to be helping outlaws, the young boy is killed, and Hopalong Cassidy is not only accused of causing his death, but is accused of being connected to the smugglers. He is stripped of his Texas Ranger badge and banished from the ranks of the good guys, even as his pals watch in dismay.

Hopalong Cassidy’s days of doing good for the new West may be over as he joins the ranks of the outlaws, who are the only folk who will accept him now. What does it take to turn a good man bad? Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
