The Talented and Beautiful Fool of the Family

B-movie stars Richard Arlen and Mary Beth Hughes star in this crime action adventure in the big woods, but before you watch it let me tell you about the other blonde girl in the story.

June Havoc, the piano playing second female star in this show, had a pushy show-business mother named Rose who pushed five-year-old June and her seven-year-old big sister Louise onto the Vaudeville stage to make big bucks for mama to spend. The two girls’ act made big bucks that mama managed to spend faster than they could earn it.

When June was thirteen years old she ran away and got married to Bobby Reed, one of the boys she met on the Vaudeville circuit. Without the prettier and more talented June in mama’s act, she turned her attention to older sister Louise . . . . actually her name was Rose Louise, named after her mother Rose, and the older sister became the famous stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. June was furious when her sister Gypsy Rose Lee wrote about her and included her in the famous Broadway show “Gypsy” and they never talked again to each other until just before Gypsy Rose Lee died.

June Havoc never became as famous as her sister Gypsy Rose Lee, but she did live a much longer and happier life than her older sister. Besides her movies and television appearances, she is famous for winning a hundred-dollar second place prize for dancing in a dance marathon. June and her partner danced for four months, swinging with her partner for a total of three thousand hours to win only one-hundred dollars and second place.

Politically June was a conservative Republican, but she was one of four Republicans in Hollywood who voiced opposition when Republican Senator McCarthy had hearings that branded anyone in Hollywood with liberal politics as an anti-American communist and blacklisted them from working. Looking back on her life, June once said, “My sister was beautiful and clever and ruthless. My mother was endearing and adorable and lethal. They were the same person. I was the only fool of the family.”

June Havoc passed peacefully at the age of ninety-seven in 2010. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
