Outlaws that Don't Know When they're Licked
Harry Sherman produced fifty-four Hopalong Cassidy movies starring William Boyd, and this one is number fifty-three. In most of the stories Hopalong Cassidy and his side-kicks battle outlaws who are persecuting towns or ranchers, or a rancher’s daughter. In every story Hopalong Cassidy wins – He will always come out on top, killing or sending the outlaws to jail. This story might just be the first adventure where the outlaws win.
Bud Trilling has a band of outlaws that rob banks and hold up stage coaches and never get caught. Not only that, but no one knows what Bud Trilling looks like. He is a mysterious man who can walk right up to the Sheriff and even Hopalong Cassidy without a bit of suspicion. How can Hopalong Cassidy catch a man that he cannot even recognize?
Hoppy and his boys are taking a herd of cattle to the Bar J ranch outside Prescott, and the whole herd will be rustled by the Trilling Outlaws. Not only that, but Hopalong and his boys will spend their time in the local jail while the outlaws deliver the cattle to the Bar J and collect the money. All the while, the outlaws have convinced the Prescott Sheriff that Hoppy and his boys are the Trilling gang, and Hopalong cannot prove who he is – No one will believe him. If he cannot prove who he is, he may be stretching rope soon. After fifty-three successful adventures, Hopalong Cassidy may have finally been defeated by the outlaws led by the mysterious man. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
