Death, Be Not Proud . . .

If you knew that you would die in a few hours, or a few days at most . . . How would you act? What would you say to the others trapped with you? Would you keep hoping for salvation? When several incidents that appear to be certain salvation end in disaster would you still hope? Would you still fight to live another day or would you curl into a ball and wait silently for the end? Would you steal extra food while others went hungry so that you could survive another day? Would you give up your food so others could live another day? . . . . Honest answers now, no one is listening. It is a normal day in London when pilots, stewardess and passengers board a plane headed for the Continent. The passengers include a female movie star and her manager, a famous tenor opera singer, a man confined to an iron-lung on his way to another doctor with his nurse, two brothers, one devil-gives-a-care fellow always getting into trouble and the other always coming to his rescue, and a man escaped from a war concentration camp on his way to reunite with his family. The plane leaves England and when high in the Swiss Alps the starboard engine goes out, forcing them to land in the snow high in the Swiss Alps where the chances of anyone spotting them is very slim. Some will survive, some will not. During the days that follow, with the face of death constantly at their side watching with a lustful grin, this group of people will expose their souls. . . . As they struggle to survive each day the social fa├žade that they wear in polite society will be stripped away and the deepest emotions of their souls will be exposed for all of us to observe. Some who seem gracious and loving when all is well will become monsters in their fight to survive. Some who seem to be skunks before the disaster will discover that inside them is someone much better than the person who boarded the plane in England. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
