The Irish Chapel Girl and the Darby
As our drama opens it is the mid 1800’s and young Esther Waters is on her way to a new job as a kitchen maid in a huge estate, and as she pauses to look at the mansion that is to be her new working home, she prays that she might be preserved from all manner of evil. . . . Fat chance that will be. . . . . But I get ahead of myself.
A fellow named Lucky Latch, one of the estate footmen, finds Esther and escorts her to the kitchen where she is promptly put to work. They will quickly fall in love, but there are problems. Esther is a chapel girl . . . . No smoking, drinking, swearing, or most of all, horseracing and gambling. Esther cannot abide any of those terribly sinful things.
William ‘Lucky’ Latch is the son of the previous owner of the grand estate, but his family lost the estate because of drinking and gambling on the horses, . . . . And Lucky Latch is determined to become the wealthiest book-maker in England and reclaim the family estate.
If opposites attract, this will be the perfect couple. Unfortunately one day Esther catches her Lucky lover in the bedroom of the young mistress of the estate, and runs crying to her room. It isn’t long before Lucky Latch runs away with the wealthy heiress of the estate for parts unknown, . . . . Before Esther can tell him that she is carrying his child.
Esther decides that she should go home, where her mother will help her, but when she gets there a stranger answers the door and she is told that her mother has died. . . . . Pregnant Esther is alone in a very unfriendly world for young unwed mothers. Will her deep religious beliefs help her to withstand the storms of adversity that will consume much of her life? Will she end up an old and broken woman with memories of nothing but grief and hardship? Will Esther ever discover full and meaningful love? Will Paradox win the Darby? Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
