Love, Laughter and Life

I had one older brother and five older sisters, but as I was a late-in-life accident, my childhood years were mostly spent with only my older sister Carol. My older brother David died when I was very young, and my other sisters were mostly grown, married and gone by the time I came along. Dad and Mom both had middle names that began with the letter ā€˜Eā€™ and each of us kids also have middle names beginning with ā€˜Eā€™. Back in those days large families were not the exception, but the norm. When my sisters would visit with their husbands Dad would smile and comment that he never lost five daughters, but gained five sons-in-law, giving him and mom a bigger family to love and laugh with.

This story is a 1948 slice of family life in England in the Hapgood home. Mr. and Mrs. Hapgood have two daughters and two sons all living in the home they were born in. Myra, the youngest girl is 17 and the only one still in school. The others are young adults with jobs . . . . And beaus. The family home is always full of people arguing, laughing, loving . . . . And living life together . . . a full and rich life. . . . . A perfect life in the eyes of Mom and Dad Hapgood . . . . But then disaster strikes . . . . Well . . . . Not actually disaster . . . . . One by one all of the kids find mates and want to begin their new life away from the only home that they have ever known. Like in many families, Dad takes it better than Mom, especially the news that their oldest daughter wants to marry a man who has been . . . . . Can I say it? . . . . . Divorced! In 1948 this was a very serious, very bad and very rare thing to happen. And the other kids . . . . They all bring their own set of challenges to Mom and Dad as they make their life choices that for once do not include them . . . . They are all leaving the home and family that nurtured them and provided a safe and loving place to live. There will be a bit of sorrow and sadness for Mom and Dad, like in most families, but they will learn to celebrate and encourage their children as they leave the nest one by one to begin their own family adventures. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
