The King's Fool and His Mistress

This British comedy takes us back to the 1600’s and the time of Oliver Cromwell. King Charles II has been banished from the island and Cromwell rules with a murderous vengeance as he tries to kill all of the citizens loyal to King Charles. England is a terrible place to live. No man dare trust his neighbor for fear of being informed on. England is one vast island prison, and Cromwell is an inhuman monster. Charles Stuart has been banished from the island and is trying to plot his return, with the help of the British citizens that are still loyal to him. Colonel Lovelace, one of Cromwell’s men, is secretly loyal to King Charles, and wants to help the King regain the throne, but there is a problem. The King’s plans are in a letter that must be delivered to Lord Doverhouse and his wife, who are secret conspirators organizing the revolt on Cromwell. Unfortunately all of the gentry are watched constantly and there is only one way to get the secret letter from King Charles to Lord Doverhouse . . . . A fool must be found who will never arouse suspicion. . . . Sid Field, comedian in the London music houses in the 1940’s, is Sidcup Buttermeadow, a good-hearted fool, and Margaret Lockwood is Nell Gwynne, a young barmaid who will help the fool in his dangerous mission. The dangers that Buttermeadow and lovely Nell will encounter are real, and the enemies of the King are determined to prevent his return . . . . .Buttermeadow finally reaches Doverhouse castle to deliver the secret letter to Lady Doverhouse, but then Oliver Cromwell arrives. Oliver Cromwell and his soldiers trap Buttermeadow and Nell in the Doverhouse castle before they have a chance to deliver their letter. The castle is surrounded by Cromwell soldiers, and inside the castle Cromwell and his men are chasing Buttermeadow and Nell and they don’t have a ghost of a chance to escape the wrath of Cromwell. . . . . Well. . . . . Maybe just a ghost of a chance after all. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
