My Friends Call Me 'Billy'
One Saturday afternoon when I was a young pup Dad and I were watching television when an old movie serial about outer space came on and I was immediately hooked. "That's Buster Crabbe," my dad said, "he was an Olympic swimming champion a few years ago."
"Is he the guy that makes shoes?" I replied.
"No, Jimmy, you are thinking of Buster Brown. After the Olympics Buster Crabbe became a famous movie star, mostly as a cowboy, and he was also Tarzan in some movies, but for this movie serial he plays the part of Flash Gordon, the comic strip hero that explores outer space in a rocket ship."
That was my early introduction to Buster Crabbe, and I've enjoyed every movie that I've seen him in so far, and this one is one of the best. Early on he has a bar scene where he faces Jack Ingram, who plays the head henchman Red Berton, and Buster is as tough as it gets, losing his smile and ready to battle to the death if necessary . . . it gave me goose bumps watching the affable leading man turn so serious and deadly. In this adventure he is Billy the Kid, who along with his buddies is falsely accused of killing a man, and as the movie opens Billy and his two buddies are in jail getting ready for their last meal before being hung for that murder. The action begins fast and furious and it looks like Billy the Kid will be outsmarted by a town run by outlaws that make up their own laws as they go along. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
