Death Rides the Range

The best cowboy westerns have plenty of action, great background music to get the blood flowing, and a pretty lady for the bad guy to threaten and the good guys to save. Oh . . . there is also a bit of shooting and dying in every classic cowboy western, but few of them feature death like this one. The first and most ingenious death . . . a method that would be copied many times in later years, is the death of well-known bad guy I. Stanford Jolley, who is one of my two favorite cowboy bad guys. In this thriller he is The Mesquite Kid, and before we get too far into the story he and Ray Corrigan, one of the Range Busters schedule a shootout at 4pm in the local saloon. You have seen death like this in later years, but for my money I. Stanford Jolley sets the standard for this method of dying . . . no one since has done it better. After watching many of the classic cowboy shows I have become very familiar with many of the character actors that performed in so many of the stories . . . . Like Jimmy Aubrey, who is the town drunk in this one, and George Chesebro, the gunman who shoots at Elmer the wooden dummy, and Budd Buster, who is Mayor Noah Smyth, with a 'y'. The second notable death is performed with excellence by veteran cowboy actor Glenn Strange, who in this one is a half-witted, scar faced henchman named Maverick. No simple 'grab your gut and fall to the ground' for Maverick, let me tell you. All in all, I think the story line is just about like most of the good cowboy shows, but the acting and especially the death scenes are waaaaay better than usual . . . probably due to the excellent directing by S. Roy Luby. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter and enjoy the dying.
