Picking A Hundred Acres of Oranges Before Midnight

Suzanne Lorraine Burce was born on April 1, 1929, about six months before the beginning of the Great Depression. As a youngster, Suzanne began singing and dancing everywhere her mother could arrange, and once her mother had young Suzanne’s hair permed in an attempt to make her look like Shirley Temple. Her crystal-clear singing voice got her a seven-year contract with MGM at the age of 14, and almost as soon as she was signed up with MGM, they loaned her out to independent producer Charles R. Rogers for her first movie, this one, an homage to the famous Walt Witman poem about the freedom of the open road.

In this teenage musical adventure, she plays the part of a child movie star named Jane Powell. Suzanne used this name as her stage name for the rest of her career. The movie begins with a credit to “The American Youth Hostels, for their inspiration, for their cooperation and, above all, for their fine contribution to the American way of life.”

After watching many movies of this period, this is the first encounter I can remember mentioning this organization. If any visitor knows about this period, either first hand, or from stories and memories from their parents or grandparents, I’d be honored if you would write and tell me about them, so I could share the information here, to keep their history and knowledge alive.

Along with the first-time movie appearance for Jane Powell, we will enjoy glimpses of veteran Vaudeville stage performers Edgar Bergen with his ventriloquist dummies Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd, and the final motion picture appearance of the legendary comedian W.C. Fields. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
