Ma Conway and the Gunslinger

Sarah Padden, born in England in 1881, is usually seen in classic movies as the old lady . . . . Sometimes the mother, sometimes the landlady or other character part with few if any script lines, and fewer close-up shots. In this singing cowboy adventure she is the leading character . . . . Sure, singing cowboy Eddie Dean gets top billing, and bull-whip expert Lash La Rue is the leading bad guy, but Sarah Padden, as Ma Conway, carries the story and is the only person in the movie that we will remember long after the story plot is forgotten. Ma Conway runs the biggest ranch outside Laramie, Wyoming territory, and she also owns the Laramie newspaper. Her biggest wish is that Wyoming Territory becomes part of the new union of territories and colonies called the United States. Ma Conway is convinced that if Wyoming was part of the union, shyster outlaws like the town banker and town businessman Landow would be put out of business and the honest ranchers and businessmen would not be taken advantage of. Landow is the town tax assessor, cattle buyer and land agent, and he makes sure that every transaction includes a nice slice of money for himself, and he convinces the townsfolk to take paper promises from the banker instead of gold, while the banker and Landow keep all the gold to themselves. Ma Conway keeps warning the town about these two men in her newspaper, and they don't like that one little bit. Ma won't sell her newspaper to them, and she won't back away from a fight . . . . So the two crooked businessmen send for The Cheyenne Kid . . . The roughest, toughest gunfighter in the Wyoming Territory, and he is even better with a bull whip than he is with a gun. When the Cheyenne Kid gets to town he decides that the best way to ruin Ma Conway is to become a ranch hand for her and destroy her from the inside. Soon Ma Conway will be broke, without any cattle, and worst of all, The Cheyenne Kid may even steal the heart of young Vicky Conway away from good guy Eddie. What chance has a tough old gal got against the fastest gunman in the Territory? Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
