Ma Conway and the Gunslinger

Sarah Padden, born in England in 1881, is usually seen in classic movies as an older lady. Sometimes the mother, sometimes the landlady or other character part with few if any script lines, and fewer close-up shots. In this singing cowboy adventure she is the leading character. . . . Sure, singing cowboy Eddie Dean gets top billing, and bull-whip expert Lash La Rue is the leading bad guy, but Sarah Padden, as Ma Conway, carries the story and is the only person in the movie that we will remember long after the story plot is forgotten.

Ma Conway runs the biggest ranch outside Laramie, Wyoming territory, and she also owns the Laramie newspaper. Her biggest wish is that Wyoming Territory becomes part of the new union of territories and colonies called the United States. Ma Conway is convinced that if Wyoming was part of the union, shyster outlaws like the town banker and town businessman Landow would be put out of business and the honest ranchers and businessmen would not be taken advantage of.

Landow wants to get rid of Ma Conway, so he sends for a hired killer called the Cheyenne Kid, with instruction to murder the old lady. What chance does an old lady have against a young, whip-lashing killer? Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
