The Knave of Diamonds, Russian Cigarettes, and the Green Finger
Some of the cleverest detective mystery stories reveal who the bad guys are very early in the story, and in this murder mystery we know who the bad guys are, and can watch the detectives search for clues that will reveal to them what we already know . . . but wait . . . the authors have shared with us the identity of the diamond thieves, the location of the hideout, and it seems everything that there is to know . . . but hold on a second . . . we have been duped! There are surprises waiting . . . it seems that the authors have kept a couple of secrets from us after all. Paul Temple is a crime novel author who outwits the police by solving tough crimes that baffle Scotland Yard. As our adventure opens he is at his country estate visiting with his neighbors, a doctor and his niece, who will turn out to be the ringleaders of an international jewel robbery gang. The gang is robbing London jewelers one after the other, and Scotland Yard is at wit's end. Yes, we know who the gang members are, and we watch as they plan and execute their crimes, but there is one man we don't know the identity of . . . the brains of the gang, known as the Knave of Diamonds. The only thing we know about this mystery man is that he always smokes Russian cigarettes . . . and we learn that Sir Graham Forbes of Scotland Yard also smokes Russian cigarettes . . . Have the authors of the story once again shared the solution to the mystery? Maybe so . . . or maybe there is more to this mystery than we first suspect. All along we think that we know all there is to know about this mystery and are just watching to see how soon Paul Temple and Scotland Yard will catch on, but then we are suddenly thrust into a dark mystery that only Paul Temple can solve . . . and we have no idea what will happen when the lights go dark and the Knave of Diamonds enters the room . . . and that man . . . the brains of the gang . . . will enter a struggle to the death with Paul Temple. Who will the green fickle finger of fate point to? Will it be Sir Graham Forbes of Scotland Yard? Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
