Football is More than a Game at West Point
Thomas Jefferson was elected President of the United States in 1800, becoming the third President of the young nation. Shortly after he took office in 1801 he called for the establishment of a United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. America’s first military academy opened on March 16, 1802.
The Army football team played its first game in 1890. It was, and still is, mandatory for all West Point Cadets to attend every home game, and to stand for the duration of every game. In 1944 the Army Black Knights football team won its first national championship with the help of Doc Blanchard, Glenn Davis and Pete Dawkins. They went on to win national championships in the following two years also.
Doc Blanchard was the first Junior to win the Heisman Trophy in 1945, and all three of the star players for those championship teams would also win the Heisman Trophy.
This story includes both Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis playing themselves, and chronicles their time at West Point and the adventures of the Army Black Knights football team, ending with the climactic 1944 Army-Navy game. Are you ready for some football? Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
