Who’s the Boss? E-Gads! . . . Not Father!

As this family adventure begins, we meet the family, vendors and servants in the home of Clarence Day on Madison Avenue.  I’ve gotta be honest, my first feelings for the father of this household were not complimentary. I quickly branded the man an authoritarian brute imposing his over-bearing personality on everyone around him.

Then I met Mama Day, played by Irene Dunne, and their four young sons. It soon became apparent that Father was not the mean ogre he tried to be, but rather the hapless victim of his lovely wife and family. The more he blustered and the more he got angry and demanding, the easier it was for his wife to wrap him around her little finger like a piece of string. The stronger his demands became on any subject, the more certain it became that he would not have his way.

Soon I no longer felt sorry for the family, but rather I chuckled in delight at the follies of this poor fellow who was the feared boss at work, if not at home. Fortunately, Mama Day is gracious enough to let Father believe that he is the head of the house and the absolute ruler of all that he beholds. . . . . Yeah, right! . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
