The Sentimental Gentlemen of Swing

Tommy Dorsey and his brother Jimmy Dorsey played their unique style of swing music that the world danced to until rock ‘n roll was created. They were born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania in coal mining country. This fictionalized story of the brothers features both of the real men and many of the real musicians of the era. One of the fictions woven into the story is the local dance hall owned by a man named Gorman. The actual dance hall that they first played in was the Lakewood Ballroom at Lakewood Park, owned and operated by the Guinan family from 1916 until 1984.  How do I know that? Because of Rell.

As I write this I live in almost rural Niles, Ohio, and my neighbor is Rell. Rell’s father was a supervisor at the same coal mine that the father of the Dorsey’s worked at, and Rell’s home was near the Lakewood Ballroom. When the Dorsey Brothers returned home to Shenandoah, they always played at the Lakewood Ballroom to entertain the home crowd. On warm summer evenings, with the doors and windows open at the ballroom, Rell would lay in bed as a youngster and go to sleep listening to the swinging music through his open window.

This movie features not only a great story about the two music legends, but also sprinkles in many of the top hits from the 1940’s featuring many of the actual performers, including the King of the Jazz dance bands, Paul Whiteman. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
