Come In and Be Yourself, and Have the Time of Your Life!
Before I watched this movie, I read that it bombed in the theaters when it was released. It was proclaimed James Cagney's absolute worst movie. Now maybe I'm just stupid, or maybe I just don't know what a good movie is, or maybe I just like what most people do not like . . . . but this is movie is on my personal 'favorites' list. Call me crazy and I will most likely agree with you, but I still like this story more than most.
James Cagney plays 'Joe' a barfly who's hobby is people. Think about the 'Cheers' television show about a neighborhood bar, with a room full of 'characters,' then think about the wisdom of the ages, and where you might find it. In a dive bar in the roughest part of town? You betcha!
James Cagney is the bar-fly that mystifies everyone. William Bendix is the owner of this strange bar, and Broderick Crawford is the local beat cop.
Remember the wealthy Mrs. Howell from the television show 'Gilligan's Island?' She appears in this one as a society lady - she is much younger than when on Gilligan's Island, but you will know her voice in an instant. If you are wondering about the young blonde actress named Jeanne Cagney, she is James Cagney's younger sister.
If you enjoy a story that winds itself around spectacular characters with character, spend the next hour and a half at Nick's Pacific Street Saloon, Restaurant and Entertainment Palace, where you are invited to come in and be yourself . . . you may just have The Time of Your Life! Nothing is as it seems to be in this neighborhood bar, but everything is exactly as it seems. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
