Truck Driving Road Kill

Frankie Darro made a good living during the golden age of movies by playing different characters that by stumbling around with a bit of comedy, also solved crimes accidentally on purpose. This story is no exception.

Little Frankie O'Malley and his buddy Jeff 'Jefferson' Smith, played by Mantan Moreland, are looking for work in depression era 1941. When Frankie spots a newspaper advertisement for truck drivers he convinces Jeff that they should apply for the jobs. They are paying an astounding one dollar an hour - a huge amount for 1941. Twenty five years later, in 1968 while I was in high school I had a job as a short order cook at the Howard Johnson's restaurant on the Pennsylvania Turnpike at Somerset, and I was earning about 95 cents an hour, and thought I was wealthy!

What our two heroes do not know is that a rival trucking company is trying to put Overland Trucking Company out of business, so the bad guys are systematically forcing the Overland trucks off the road, and even killing some of the drivers. That's why the Overland is paying such big wages for drivers. All of the Overland drivers have either been injured, killed, or scared away from their jobs.

For their first run, when the bad guys try to run Frankie and Jeff off the road. Frankie speeds up so much that a couple of motorcycle cops pull them over for speeding and the bad guys don't get the opportunity to push them off the road. We also learn that Pop Wallace, the owner of the Overland Trucking Company, is involved in this insurance scam somehow, but he seems to be reluctant and regretful that he is in the middle of this mess.

Later, on their next run, they are kidnapped by the henchmen and taken to the competition trucking company and held prisoner. It is beginning to look pretty bad for our heroes, but have no fear, because Frankie always comes out on top. Pop a big batch of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
