A Man Loose in the All-Girls College
This college comedy caper is a movie version of a Broadway Show, with plot dialogue separated by Broadway show tunes. Do you remember 'Some Like it Hot' with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon dressing up as girls and playing in an all-girls band? That was made in 1959, and boys dressing as girls was pretty radical then. This movie was made 18 years earlier, and was probably very scandalous in some parts of the country, although today it seems very tame, but still very funny.
Many of the finest colleges were not Co-Ed in 1941, so when a male college put on a play, they used guys dressed as girls for the female parts. College student Bob Sheppard, played by Johnny Downs, is a blonde impersonator in the Zeta fraternity school play.
The Brooklyn born actor appeared in several ‘Our Gang’ comedy shorts when he was eight years old. Besides this musical comedy, he is famous for his part in the Charles Boyer/Hedy Lamarr blockbuster Algiers. After retiring from motion pictures he became a television personality in San Diego as ‘Johnny Jet’ a retired Air Force pilot who informed children about flying and World War II between showing re-runs of the ‘Our Gang’ comedy shorts.
In this comedy adventure, when a nearby all-girls college makes fun of the nearby all-boys college to get some publicity, the boys decide to get revenge by having Bob dress up as a girl and become a student at the all-girls college.
Noah Beery Jr. plays a college frat student in this story. If you remember the 'Rockford Files' television show, Noah Beery Jr. played the father of detective James Rockford. His college buddy is Alan Hale Jr., who would become famous as the Skipper on the television show ‘Gilligan’s Island.’ Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
