Some time ago actress Carole Landis came to my attention and I've been finding and adding some of her motion pictures that are in public domain, and this one in particular got my attention. In 1943 Charles R. Rogers produced a movie about the John Robert Powers model agency in New York City . . . the model agency that connected many of the most beautiful female models with advertising agencies and motion picture companies, including Grace Kelly, Jennifer Jones and Betty Bloomer . . . Betty Bloomer became Betty Ford when she married Gerald Ford, who became the 38th President of the United States. The movie about the Powers Girls features Benny Goodman and his orchestra, which was at it's peak popularity with their unique swing style music, featuring their star singer Peggy Lee. In 1943 one of the most famous radio shows was the Jack Benny comedy show, featuring Irish tenor Dennis Day, who was heard on the radio but never seen. He plays himself singing with the Benny Goodman orchestra. Along with Carole Landis are stars George Murphy, Alan Mowbray and many more . . . but I could not find this movie anywhere . . . I searched all of my usual movie sales sites and private collectors that I've come to know, but no one had this movie . . . without a big movie studio behind it, the film had possibly become 'extinct' - and might never again be seen. Finally I discovered that a collector in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada had a copy and I eagerly paid him to send a copy to me . . . Weeks passed and the movie did not arrive . . . I sent him a note asking if he had forgotten about it, and he assured me that sometimes it takes longer than anticipated to get a package from Saskatoon to Niles, Ohio, so my wait continued. After several more weeks I gave up on it and marked it up to a lost cause, but just a few days ago a package arrived and it was a copy of possibly the last remaining instance of The Powers Girl. I was soon disappointed that the quality of this copy is very poor, but after watching it realized that the story and music were as tantalizing as they must have been when 1943 audiences watched it in their local theaters. I'll keep looking for a better copy, but until then you and the rest of the world can watch, download and save this movie that might have been just a short breath away from extinction. Pop a big bowl of white kerenel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
